9th May 2012. All over Europe, Young European Federalists celebrate 9th May and recall the necessity of a united Europe.
On 9th May 1950, after the devastation of World War II, Robert Schuman, the then French Foreign Affairs Minister, claimed the historical necessity to build a European Federation.
Today, more than sixty years later, the Young European Federalists [JEF-Europe] organise various events and public actions in many decades of cities across the continent to emphasize the need to move towards the political unity of Europe, even more so now, after the economic and social crisis.
“In these hard times”, explains Carlo Maria Palermo, board member of JEF-Europe, “it is necessary to keep in mind the spirit of the Founding Fathers of the European Union reminding national governments, policy makers and citizens that the economic crisis can be only solved with more and not less integration, starting from further fiscal integration among the Eurozone countries and all the others willing to do so”.
JEF calls for this process to be taken up until the establishment of a European Federation with a European government fully accountable in front of the Parliament will make the European dream come true.
“Today we are mobilized across Europe in order to recall that the idea behind celebrating this day ultimately lies in the quest for more European integration and the European vision of peace, solidarity and democracy”, concludes Pauline Gessant, President of JEF-Europe.
