Greece Action: 'United in Solidarity' for Greece
All over Europe, 11-17 June 2012

Greek election Sunday is coming closer - and so is the possibility of Greece being thrown out of the Eurozone. To demonstrate European unity and solidarity with the Greek people, JEF-Europe launches a street action under the motto 'United in solidarity'.

All local sections are invited to go out on the street and dance Sirtaki this week (and beyond). During its recent meeting in Paris, the EB has already shown how easily implementable this action is (see video below). Apart from that, dancing Sirtaki on the street attracts a lot of attention, has a direct, positive link with Greece, is fun and totally free!

In this Short Guide to the Greece Action, you will find some more information plus helpful websites that explain the dancing steps. When implementing the action, we ask you to document it with a short video just like the EB has done. Please send it to activism@jef.eu, so it can be uploaded on Facebook and the dedicated jef.eu page.

Executive Bureau meeting: Report
Paris, 1-3 June 2012

The Executive Bureau held its last meeting in Paris earlier this month, where the members discussed a range of important topics to move our organisation forward, and to define the right political answer to this deep financial and political crisis. It is clear that a federalist momentum is needed!

Among other things organisational and administrative matters, internal and external communication, past and future pan-European actions and events, and the situation of our national sections were discussed. Also the hand-over with the newly elected Secretary-General Stefan Manevski was on the agenda.

Concrete decisions were taken on the development of a new JEF-Europe website, a campaign to provoke federalist debate within JEF, the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of JEF-Europe (more news soon!) and last but not least the Greece 'United in Solidarity' street action!

You can contact the Executive Bureau of JEF-Europe directly at eb@jef.eu!

European Commission: 'Science, it's a girl thing!' campaign
Brussels @ Esplanade of the European Parliament – 21 June 2012

On 21 June 2012, the European Commission will launch a new campaign 'Women in Research and Innovation', to encourage girls to study science-related subjects and to engage young women in research careers. Women remain largely under-represented in the science, technology and research fields in Europe, which constitutes a huge waste of talent.

The first phase of the campaign (2012-2013) will target young girls aged 13 to 18 with the slogan 'Science: it's a girl thing!'. It will encourage girls to develop an interest in science, nurture their confidence and challenge stereotypes around science, and show them that science can be a great opportunity for their future.

The campaign will start in five countries (Austria, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Poland) before being expanded to the rest of the EU. Following the launch, a mobile roadshow will roll into cities in each of these countries, bringing music and dance and offering fun, on-the-spot scientific activities demonstrating the connection between science and music, cosmetics and more.

Discover the full explanation of the campaign here.

Networking European Citizenship Education: Conference 'Participation Now! Citizenship Education and Democracy in Times of Change?'

Córdoba (Spain) - 21-24 November 2012

This year's NECE Conference will focus on current concepts of democracy and participation in the face of worldwide processes of change in politics, society and economy.

In Europe, but also in other Western countries, a massive loss of trust in the legitimacy and creative power of democratic institutions can be noted as a result of the financial crisis. At the same time, radical changes in the societies of authoritarian states, e.g. in North Africa, have resulted in attempts at transition to democracy, thereby initiating transformation processes with uncertain consequences.

As a consequence of these worldwide developments, new movements of social and political protest have emerged, indicating new ways of organising civil society. Despite a high degree of diversity, the common feature of these movements is a demand for more participation and transparency of political decision-making.

The following questions will be discussed: Which initiatives can help to foster the internationalisation of citizenship education in the coming years? Are there any lessons for the contents and methods of citizenship education resulting from emerging protest movements and spontaneous citizen initiatives ? inside and outside of Europe? Click here to view the programme.
